Is It Any Good?

Our review:

The latest in the animated Resident Evil series, this fifth installment doesn't aspire to do any more than pit its saintly heroes against the latest bad guy with a plot to take over the world. Resident Evil: Death Island plays like a a feature-length cut scene from the best-selling horror survivalist video game series, which is fine for fans of the game, but maybe less so for those who aren't. Its plot, as much as it matters, calls on a returning band of government operatives to foil yet another outbreak of zombies and monsters. The film is at its best when its hyperactive action sequences leap into life. A daring duel along a busy highway and the race to escape a bio-organic monster that looks like a cross between Marvel's Carnage and the Alien franchise's Xenomorph both dole out drama and thrills in rapid succession. The rest is dialed in and delivered to order, though, powered by the legacy of the series' appeal rather than any new ideas.
