Oddball humor is OK for teens ... but is it funny?

Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 14–18

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

Frylock's brains and maturity make up for Master Shake's ethical stumbles. But Meatwad usually gets squished in the process. Neighbor Carl is a terrible role model.
  • Violence:

Occasional cartoon violence includes guns and some blood.
  • Sex:

At least one episode involves a hooker, but the Aqua Teens are generally asexual. Their neighbor has pubic lice.
  • Language:

"Hell," "bitch," "damn," and "ass" have free reign, but bigger words get bleeped.
  • Consumerism:

The beer a neighbor drinks looks suspiciously like Budweiser.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

Beer is featured prominently, although no one on the Hunger Force seems to drink. Drugs and tobacco pop up occasionally.

What Parents Need to Know

About Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Parents need to know that the members of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force don't really have much contact with water (except for their neighbor's pool), aren't really teens, and are occasionally hungry but rarely exhibit much force. Mostly, they're shown hanging around their house, which looks more like a bombed-out crack den, and getting involved in side schemes that never turn out well. They sling insults at each other, don't hold steady jobs, and apparently live off welfare. And to top it all off, they're junk food personified.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about whether a cartoon really needs a plot to be funny. (Based on Aqua Teen Hunger Force's popularity, apparently not.) The show also prompts questions about group dynamics among friends with distinct personalities. Why do some people become leaders who get to tell everyone else what to do -- and why do others become followers who get mercilessly pushed around? How many bad decisions does a person have to make before being ousted by disgruntled friends?

    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Inappropriate sexual content
    • Drinking, smoking, or drug use

It is mostly random but sometimes funny. Little blood. The only thing I really dont like is that they have posters of girls almost naked.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force is ok but not funny.

Some blood but is sometimes funny. Not that much sexual behavior. Some language.

I rate this title iffy for age 17 and give it 5.0
    My concerns are:
    • Excessive violence
    • Inappropriate sexual content
    • Inappropriate language
    • Drinking, smoking, or drug use
    • Negative message
    • Negative role models

Hilarious, but a lot worse than many make it out to be.

A lot of people on this site, including the person that wrote the official review for this show, don't seem aware of the true nature of the show. Granted, many of the reviews were written before the show got so bad, but you need to understand that this is one of the most unapologetically obscene, violent, and racist shows you'll ever see, not to mention the fact that the jokes mock so many taboo issues. The violence is very graphic, with characters being decapitated, committing suicide, being ripped apart, having parts of their bodies blown off, etc. with copious amounts of blood. Profanity is also an issue. Even though the f-word is censored (even on the DVDs), there is still a lot of other words that are uncensored. Characters refer ro policemen as "pigs", and, in one episode, a strong word meaning "penis" is used 63 times in a 10-minute episode. One episode contains graphic drug content, with both dialog and depictions of characters getting high. The sexual content is also extremely offensive, with episodes featuring graphic sexuality, explicit humor, and one episode featuring four or five explicit rape scenes. But the worst thing, by far, is the message the show sends. Rape, cancer, and suicide are all portrayed as very funny and acceptable sources of humor by the show. One episode was banned from TV due to its racist depiction of African-American culture through hateful stereotypes, and implying that being black should be "cured". Honestly, I love this show, but I'm mature enough to make the distinction as to what behavior is and is not acceptable to repeat and emulate (the answer: nothing on this show). Many are not, especially fans of shows like this one without any positive messages whatsoever. NOTE: Most of the earlier episodes are a lot more appropriate than the ones mentioned here; it's the newest episodes that give the show a bad name.
