Parents need to know

Parents need to know that this site begins with a kid adopting a virtual pet and collecting the local currency (Neopoints) to take care of him. The site promotes making and spending money -- from playing games to earn Neopoints to visiting the online story to buy real-life T-shirts, stickers, the Neopets magazine, and plush toys. Although the games cover everything from arcade action to anagrams, some feature gambling and betting. Kids can buy a Neopian lottery ticket and buy and sell virtual stocks. All bulletin boards are monitored and kids have to be 13 to post and are encouraged to be creative by submitting stories and drawings. The boards do have scammers wanting to hack into your account, so parents should talk to kids about never clicking on a personal URL in a board. There are a few banner ads, and Neopet owners can play games sponsored by corporations such as General Mills.

Families can talk about taking care of a pet. What's more important to give a pet -- a new coat or love and attention? Parents can also talk to their kids about the dangers of obsessing about money and gambling. What does it mean to gamble?

In NEOPETS.COM’s online world, Neopia, players explore a variety of landscapes, which offer games and curious shops where you can "purchase" a magical potion, a virtual snack, or a book to read to your pet. The more pets read, the smarter they become, which is important in the pet's ever-changing statistical summary of abilities, strength, health, and other attributes. Neopets require regular feeding. To purchase food -- or anything else -- you must gain Neopoints. To build up a bank of Neopoints, pet owners play games. You can also apply for an online "job," which usually involves a scavenger hunt to purchase more items from other players. Another way to scrape up points is to auction unnecessary items or place them in your online store. More mature players might invest in the Neopian stock market. Among Neopia's many participatory options are free clubs ("guilds") that have their own discussions, giveaways, and player hints. You can also write stories for the newsletter, submit drawings, work on your pet's Web page, or post on the NeoBoards.

Is it any good?

3
Kids can get frustrated that they have to figure things out from other players. For example, you may learn on the boards that when the giant ice serpent sleeps the brave may sneak in and steal an item of his treasure. Also, there are players who scam other players out of their Neopoints and magical items, but a few third-party sites are combating this scourge.

On the positive side, messages posted on the boards are screened before they're posted, and those who break any rules will have their accounts frozen. Those younger than 13 aren't allowed to access the boards unless they've sent in parental permission.

For almost six years, this website hasn't gotten old for me!

I've been playing Neopets for a very long time. In a couple months, I will have been on it for six years. It's an extremely fun website, and there's an assortment of exciting activities like the Games Master challenges, the plots, the NeoBoards (if you are under thirteen, your parents can sign a form to allow you on these), and of course the neopoints (the currency of 'Neopia'). Younger children with parental permission for the NeoBoards will see some spam from other users, a lot of which is hugely inappropriate. Luckily, though, The Neopets Team deletes these quickly. If anyone on the website bothers you in any way, you can report them. You aren't allowed to give out or ask for personal information, or else your account gets warned, suspended, or in many cases, frozen. There's many circumstances where you have to use common sense, because The Neopets Team has a strict set of rules, and you have to protect yourself from no-good users who try to scam your account. Good writing is often encouraged, because people on the NeoBoards don't respond well to chatspeakers, so you might find your child using correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation after a month or so of the website.

i hate it

if someone hacks your account they will freeze it and you will not get it back. they say they don't keep your email address but they do. if you forget your password and creat a new account your first acccount and your new account will be frozen. and they make it to hard to make neopoints if they make the items so expensive. and neocash is to expensive for people to buy. i wouldn't go to it. but one good thing is they have neopet jr. for little kids.

Best website ever.

When I first joined Neo, my parents had just split apart and I was going to a horrible school...I had no friends, and then I came onto Neopets. Now not only do I have 7 lovable Lupes(wolves), but I have probably 100 friends worldwide! Or more! I know kids from Australia, Europe, Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Portugal, New Zeland, Russia, Germany, and even a friend who lives a few hours from me. I met her on Neo and she is now my best friend! It is nice to talk to kids all over the world. I know lots about other countries and how they live and they like learning about American life. Neopets is a safe website that is fun for people above...11 to play on. True you don't get many privilages until your 13th birthday, but it is fun still. TNT (The Neopets Team) runs the site...*whispers* They are crazy!!!!!! *glances around nervously* DONT TELL THEM I SAID THAT!!! So come on, join up, create a pet, and start having FUN!

This website is good for an imaginitave child.

In Neopets, you can explore Neopia and go to many imaginary lands. Also there are a couple hundred games in which you could play to get the the virtual money in the website, known as neopoints. Also, there is still something very wrong about the site. There is this thing called neocash, which is another kind of currency on neopets. You can buy lots of cool stuff with it. But the point is is that the so called neocash costs real money! They use that cool stuff as a bribe. They just want to trick people and get money! That is just WRONG! :(

AWSOME WEBSITE !!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the number 1 website of all time. period. I'm going to point out that no site is perfect though. The small problem with this site is the Staff. Yes, that's right, the STAFF. They have very dumb rules and they sometimes give you a warning for no reason. Yes if you do not know this site you HAVE to look into it. Don't let the evil side scare you about neopets.com, the good side WAY overpowers the bad side.

Neopets: the Review

"Welcome Abflugian_mongoose" The title runs across the top of the screen, agaisnt the garish yellow sidebar. Neopets, otherwise known as the ultimate timepwasting website, has anthing a kid would want to murder time. Don't want to play games? Then shop, feed your pets, or talk to complete strangers on the neoboards. There is a filter for bad words, but it's easily avoided. Real conversations are not aloud: no polotics, religion, or sex. (you don't know how many accounts I've had iced for that). Banners advertising all sort of crap that whiny kids will want to buy are everywhere, across the top of the site, below your game in the window....there isn't a page with some flashing advertisement of some kind. Oh, and I must mention the NC mall. Buy clothes for your virtual pet....with real money. That's right. You need 'neocash', which is purchased with real, live greenbacks. And the scary thing is, people buy it, and I can imagine kids stealing parents credit cards to do so. Huzzah for marketing scams.

Addicting!

I play on this site to this day. It is a great way for kids to learn new words, play fun games and get to know how to take care of pets. In a sense, this is the site that takes a dog(Lupe), cat(Wocky) or fish(Koi) and gives them a chance to name, feed, play with, and customize the wonderful creatures. There are some big challenges with wonderful rewards that are still going on (Altador quest, Altador cup) and a lot of figuring out how much you can spend to have a great time with your pets, no matter what age you are.

neopets for the haves not the have nots

I have played neopets off and on for many years. I recently started playing again and it didn't take long to come to realize that neopets is run by the people who have played constantly for years. They have all the rare items, their pets are all painted unique colors, and they have lots of neopoints. But for anyone else to get these items they have to spend hundreds of thousands of neopoints which take many months or years to accumulate. As far as I am concerned, this is not fair for anyone new to the site or even to other players who may have been around for a short time or just play off and on like myself.

OK site w/ Heavy Commercialism

The site is generally OK however is heavily commercialised and is loaded w/ ads and you have to pay real money occasionally

Wow!

Nothing makes me happier than neopets! It's completely harm-free, and The Battledome is not violent at all. I recomend this site for anyone over age 5.

My kids got me hooked

I wanted to know what my kids were playing so I sat down with them ... six months later I'm the one spending all my time on the site. I like the puzzle and word games and I also have a shop. There's so much you can do on this site - take care of your pet, collet items, own and run a shop, play games, play the stock market, chat. With so many items that's what can make the site iffy for kids. On the positive - kids can learn to care for a pet, learn that things cost money, how to run and stock a store - what items sell and don't - marketing etc. There are some great games that have educational value. Negative - There is a battledome (never visited myself). Some games are typical arcade. A lot of commercialism. My advise check it out for yourself and decide if it's appropriate for your child.

Careful fun for most

My kids and I have been to this site off and on for 5 years now. The games are well designed, and some are addictively fun for adults. It is interesting to set up your characters, furnish your neohome, visit the various lands, and play the challenging games. I am not impressed with the "shops" however. Neopia is truly like a microcosm of the real world- with just as much crass commercialism- and capitalism rules the day. There is also a "Battledome" in which you can engage in virtual dogfighting, pitting your pet against others in an arena with various weapons and defenses that can be purchased. You can go to academies and training schools to increase your pet's statistics (making him a better fighter), and sometimes these will increase randomly. Most of this costs neopoints (money) which has to be earned by participating in various parts of the world- mostly by playing games. There is a soup kitchen you can go to to feed your pets if you are broke enough. There is a money tree from which you can sometimes score decent items donated from other users. You can even "adopt" pets other users have abandoned, and "feed" pet pets at the animal shelter. The games are listed by type: action/adventure, chance, puzzler- and by age appropriateness. I have found these descriptions and ratings to be pretty accurate. The site quality is excellent- one of the best I have seen- and the variety of pets, petpets (pets for your pet), and items available for purchase is greater than any other site. I think there are more adult participants than on other sites, like Webkinz- if only because of the complexity of some of it: you can bank your money, buy and sell stock, maintain a store- many of these would not appeal to a younger child- but are good learning tools for older ones. You have to know your own kid well enough to determine whether he will get a positive experience. Certainly the games are fun, and many are educational.

A True Neopian Speakth

Neo, lovely Neo, for over three years you have captured my heart, reminded me that my virtual pets "love" me no matter what, and at times too turned my stomach... Neopets is about as amazing a web site as your likely to find in the virtual gaming area though I do question it's nature as a 'kid-geared site'. I have five beautiful pets, great friends, a 43-room Neohome that I spend millions of Neopoints on, a shop I never bother stocking, and a size 95 gallery that holds hundreds of shiny Neopian objects... I do not bother with the Employment Agency in Faerieland nor do I play games. (And the Lost Desert is far from barren.) Life should be so good. The worst downside to Neo is not the commercialism, it's the push for players to do 'better than you' (as one of the games I can never win is titled). Children are learning that status reigns above all else, not just from their peers, but also from their own parents who play the site. The biggest pushes on Neo are a huge avatar collection (which is part earned, part given, and part bought), a collection of some sort that is compromised of 'unbuyables'- items worth over 100k, painted pets, and a Neohome to die for. The forum boards are filled with people either trying to show off or trying to get someone else's items, and constant bickering from those who do neither. Thankfully one has the option not to 'chat'. Since the buyout by Viacom, TNT (sorry, The Neopets Team) have made some questionable site decisions, such as the NC Mall where you can purchase items with cash instead of Neopoints, furthering Neopia's worst problem, it's user's greed and pettiness. Though somehow, I do not think that solely rests on the shoulders of Neo... Oh, and the authors seriously underestimate the push to the BattleDome and the level of voilence.
