What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Disney Magic of Healthy Living is stocked with advice, recipes, and videos for kids by Disney Channel stars. In partnership with Michelle Obama's Let's Move campaign, the site stresses basic nutrition and exercise advice, but in cool ways that are promoted by the Jonas Brothers and the stars of The Suite Life on Deck, Camp Rock, and more. Note: There are many links on this site that move kids out of Magic of Healthy Living and onto other Disney sites quite seamlessly, so it may be difficult for younger kids to know they've switched to a gaming, movie, or store site and moved out of the healthy living advice.

  • Eating healthy, natural foods makes you feel and look better. Exercise can be fun: dancing, hiking, or playing basketball with friends. And, hey, all the Disney stars are doing it!

  • Disney promotes its other sites (gaming, video, music, movies, theme parks, online store, and more) across the top and bottom bars on this site. A contest running until December 2010 includes trips to Walt Disney World as prizes.
  • Kids who choose to enter an essay contest on the site are asked to submit their age, first names, and a parent's email address.

Is it any good?

If your kids like the celebrities from the Disney Channel, this just may be the place to convince them to eat more fruits and vegetables, get more exercise, and make healthier choices in daily life. The video styles are very similar to the Disney Channel "backstage" videos, including one where the Disney actors mingle with the First Lady. Most of the recipes are easy for kids to replicate with ingredients that won't be hard for parents to find at any well-stocked grocery store. The quizzes give good, solid information; most kids and even many adults are likely to learn something. It would be nice to see more interactivity here, such as message boards, an online food journal and exercise log for kids, or a Q&A box where kids can submit questions to a nutritionist and athletic trainer. Overall, a very palatable nutrition and exercise site for kids.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how kids can feel good about their bodies by taking care of them with healthy eating and exercise. It's difficult for kids to have a healthy body image with all of the unrealistic images in the media today, but by taking good care of their bodies they can feel good about themselves. Read Common Sense Media's tips on Girls and Body Image and Boys and Body Image.

  • Talk to your kids about having a healthy media diet as well as a healthy food diet. Read Common Sense Media's Tips for a Healthy Media Diet.
