murderers and drug addicts contacting my kids
Facebook is allowing a convicted murder and several drug addicts/felons to contact my minor children. I have attempted to enlist Facebook's help and Facebook REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING! As a father I have rights - but not according to Facebook.

there is nothing really bad as long as people use common sense, 13 is the youngest age allowed n the site and anyone who thinks it should be higher should see a doctor, 13 year olds are perfictly capable of understanding most things about saftey and what is right and what is wrong.

good for ages 12 + is they use the site responsibly
It is good for some people to be in contact with their friends, and make online friends as long as they use the site responsibly.

OK for kids with proper security settings
I created an account for my 11 yo son. I put a picture of his cat as his profile picture, then he can upload pictures of himself within the site that only his friends can see. I have his username and pasword and I monitor his activity and friends - he is not allowed to accept a friend w/o my permission. It's fun for him because his aunt and grandma also have accounts, so they can share pictures and stories. No one can see anything about him unless I allow it. You're supposed to be 14 or older to get an account, but I think it's OK for younger kids as long as parents have full control and go online with their kids to add photos and send messages - it's a fun thing to do together, and you might even get to know some of their friends.

Teachable moment
Parents should use high school as an opportunity to teach their kids how to use Facebook because when they go to college, most of their peers will be using the site. If you sit down with your kids and show them how to set their privacy controls so that only friends can view items and discuss what constitutes a "friend", there should be no safety issues with FB whatsoever. You can even set your profile so that you can not be found by the search engine and so that your profile pic is not shared. Better to discuss how important it is to control your image and privacy in high school than let your kids fumble their way through it on their own in college. Coaches and sororities/fraternties will make you take stuff down that is inappropriate and potential employers may check you out so best to learn how to behave while your parents still have some guidance.

An excellent site but use with caution
Facebook is a good site for keeping in contact with friends, there's lots of quizzes to do and games to play but some profiles may contain violent or disturbing video or photos and you should not put any personally identifying info on your profile like phones numbers. Overall an excellent site the best of its type on the net.

facebook
I've used facebook for a few months now, you can't customize your profile like on myspace, but its more secure (only friends can see your profile) than other profile sites and more friends oritated. Theres alot of fun games and applications you can add aswell. Its sitable for kids, but most people on it seem to be at least 16.

Facebook - Not Meant for Teens
Facebook is like any other social networking site. It was originally created for college students, but it has now become a phenomenal for high school students as well. Facebook members frequently post pictures of themselves drinking alcohol and encourage their friends to do so too. Recently, law enforcement officials have been reported to be monitoring photos and material posted on the discussion boards of the website. The website recently admitted to privacy flaws when it was pointed out by a blogger that users may have been unwillingly been exposing certain personal details on the site. In other recent news a suspect was accused of using Facebook to prey on minors. Parents who think Facebook is safe really need a wake up call in my opinion.

ok but there are some issues
Facebook is good in the sense that only people in your network or on your friends list can look at your profile. Facebook has a section called events where many teens and college kids post their parties and usually there is drinking involved. Kids can send a message to anyone. Overall facebook is definitley more safe than myspace. There seems to be a lot of advertising though on facebook.

As a college student, I use Facebook to keep in touch with my old high school friends. The site is much better than mySpace. There is a lot more privacy and I feel much more secure about who is looking at my profile. You can only see profiles in your network, and you can choose not to let your info be shown to strangers, unlike mySpace, which shows your page to everyone. The site can be good or bad, depending on who is using it. Some ppl use it to post nasty things, but for the most part (and for most of my friends), we just use it to keep in touch and keep updated about each others' lives.

Social Networking -- There's No Going Back
Facebook (and MySpace and Friendster)are here to stay. What started out as an incredible way for college kids to connect with one another has trickled down to high school -- with many more areas for concern. Kids will have to learn the hard way that their postings are not so anonymous. Rantings on facebook -- and descriptions of drinking, drugs and other questionable behaviors have gotten job and internship offers reneged from college students, and have gotten high school kids expelled. Too many parents are oblivious to their kids online activity on these social networking sites. High schoolers are not college kids -- and there is still is valid concern and rationale for parents to be aware of teenage online activity. There's been plenty of coverage lately about Internet safety and the role that parents need to play. Another interesting website for parents to check out is www.connectwithkids.com -- there is programming about life on the Internet that is really valuable for families to watch together.

Facebook is just a search engine with a smily face.
All of you should stop being so naive. Facebook is essentially a search engine with a friendly face. There are quizzes, gifts, and games. All of those contain sexual material. Quizzes include: are you sexy? what sex position are you? ( All accompanied by pics) Gifts: Animated silhouettes having sex while cartwheeling, flipping, etc. games. Here is one. Juggle Fireballs to appease the goddess! The goddess is clothed only in her hair, barely covering the essentials.

I find that the biggest problem with facebook is that my friends don't really know how to secure their facebook. Facebook is a great option to stay in touch with friends, and as most social networking sites have bad stuff, but the biggest stuff you can filter out yourself.

I do not accept a friend if I do not know them. It's fun because lots of my relatives also have accounts, so we can share pictures and stories. No one can see anything about me unless I allow it. You're supposed to be 13 or older to get an account, but I think it's fine for younger kids as long as parents monitor them

Good Friends, contact, scheuling, and fun. Your choice but its not that good.

WOW! 14+????!! I think 12+ is fine!! I have a facebook, and i lovooovee it!! My WHOLE family in my house has one, and i was the only one that didn't, but it is totally safe, but i have to ask my parents if i can accept their invite, or ask if i can become friends with them, cuz i cant become friends with someone i dont know! That would be unsafe!! :( But facebook is awesome!! i dont think its inappropriate at all!!!

You need to read this as it involves what you need to know
Safety is and not a problem. You can leash out information but as long as you keep only friends you know outside of the computer and block everyone else, it's fine. It does have an age limit of I think 14 but many people fake their age. Do not be fooled by celebritys, they are normal people pretending to be Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas. They are posers. It is rarely you will find the real person. I say its safe for 11 and over but their not even meant to have an account so I would leave it until they are old enough to have an account. Once they are older enough to have one, just leave another couple of years until you are sure the responsible enough to have an account. Keep double checking their friends and information though as you never know who they could add. Keep them under your thumbs!

13 and up? Maturity!
Okay well, i use facebook and im 13, i have everything except my friends on private, so nobody can see anything on my profile unless i add them as a friend, i only add people that i know, and decline people that i dont. It really depends on your childs maturity level. And safety is only an issue when you dont put things on private, that means always put everything on private. Have fun : )

It's a great website and a chance to chat with ppl!
Almost everybody in my class has a facebook account. It's a really fun website, perfect for teens. I created an account without telling my parents, and so did sum ppl in my class. My dad ended up blocking it, but i convinced him it's a pretty safe site and i have a fish to tend to!

Not for kids 11 and under Iffy for 12-13 and On definately for 14+
I don't have a facebook because I am simply not allowed, but many other people in my grade have it (8th grade) and it seems to me that it's much better than myspace but can still offer a great amount of cyber bullying, sexual content or pictures, and language that cannot be limited

Perfect for people to keep contact with people
Perfecto. You get to keep contact with family and friends. There are some scams but anyone with common sense won't get tricked. You can control your safety and block people who try to scare you.

You can even control you own safety (i have mine to the fullest) you can even choose certian friends to block from seeing your page. I approve of it!

Tweens - Adults, Perfect for all
I use Facebook and I love how it gives you options on who can see your page and profile. It is a very safe website if you keep your eyes and mouth open. the website asks you what you think about what the application will say or do, for example, or if you want to report someone it is done immediately . There are many kid-friendly games, and I approve of it fully.

Great Site
I am a user on facebook, and i have to say it is really safe. But all the concerns should really be filled out cause it all depends on who u are friends with. And it depends on wat u do on there. There is a lot to do also, you can play games, quizes, and let people know what your watchin/ reading. The limit on the site is 13+ so i say 13+

SO FUN!!!!
it's fine as long as your child is mature and that you can trust your child not to go to the sex and drugs applications. facebook is excellent if you want to find out more about your friends or just keep in touch with them.
