Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that this sister site to Nickelodeon's new TV show iCarly is a safe -- and fun -- place for tweens to get interactive. Web-savvy kids can upload (with their parents' approval) their tame videos (a boy spinning a basketball) and photos (cute animals or weird sandwiches) to be featured on the site and in the show.
Families can talk about the Internet. What are some of the dangers associated with using the Web? Have you or anyone you know ever been bullied or otherwise mistreated online? How? Remind your kids that they should never say anything online that they wouldn't say to someone's face, and make sure tweens understand your rules for using the Internet, especially regarding uploading videos and providing personal information. Tweens can now safely have their 15 minutes of fame. With its new TV show iCarly, Nickelodeon expands into the realm of TV-Web integration, asking viewers to contribute their tame videos and photos to the series through ICARLY.COM. Kids can also get news, read blogs, watch videos from other kids, and more. Even though the stars Carly and Sam need to lay off the caffeine just a bit, they're quite endearing. The site's graphics and layout are clean, energetic, easy to navigate, and completely feel-good, and the content is squeaky clean. Plus, kids are encouraged to flex their creative muscles by learning what it takes to produce their own Web show. It doesn't get much better than that.
Kids can tune in to iCarly on Nick to see if their submitted photo or video was chosen to be aired.
