Parents need to know that the Kidipede history site is a well-organized -- albeit a bit dry -- homework and report helper for middle schoolers. Unfortunately, at least one page that promises to get students "more help" with a topic is actually a broken link. The many flashing ads for things like phone service and credit cards are distracting. One very helpful page is a "How to Cite this Site" page, which kids definitely need as teachers and schools demand better citations of online resources to fight plagiarism.
HISTORYFORKIDS.ORG is a popular history homework help site that has continued to build its world history content for more than a decade. Maintained by a history professor at Portland State University, it reportedly is visited by about 30,000 students, teachers, and parents a day during the school year. All of the information is divided neatly into categories and subcategories (India, then Indian History, Indian Food, Indian Art, etc.).
The content and photos on this site are age-appropriate and engaging. It's just too bad the same can't be said for the ads, which are often geared toward adults. Before your child starts researching ancient China or Islamic history on this site, you may want to take a look at the ad content in the relevant sections.
