What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this social networking website is a promotional tie-in to the teen-focused Nickelodeon television sitcom Victorious, which centers on the fictional Hollywood Arts High School and a cast of colorful students at the performing arts school. Users can create a profile with an avatar and become a fan of their favorite “students” (who are actually the characters of Victorious) and follow/comment on their posts, photos, music, and blogs, but they are not allowed to post their own videos or photos. There also are a handful of simple games.

  • The website does not carry a strong message, but it is based on the TV show Victorious, which celebrates a teen's self-discovery as she steps outside her comfort zone.

  • As a companion site for a television show, this entire website is a promotional tool for Nickelodeon, its shows, and its products. The site has numerous kid-targeted ads (Kellogg’s, Wii, etc.) that link to outside sites. Each time a user is redirected to an advertiser’s site, a notice appears warning kids that they’re leaving the site and should seek their parents’ permission before entering the new site. A brief paid advertisement runs before any video or game can be accessed.
  • Some privacy issues. To register for the site, which is optional, kids select a username and password, and provide date of birth, gender, and state -- all considered non-personally identifiable information. However, the site is governed by Nick's privacy policy, which discloses relatively extensive use of tracking technologies.

Is it any good?

The Slap.com is heavily promoted on its companion television show Victorious, so tween and teen fans of the show will be eager to log on. Once there, however, there’s not a lot to keep their attention. Sure, viewers will enjoy seeing more of Tori and her classmates. Perhaps they’ll feel like they’re personally connected to their favorite show characters and the Hollywood Arts High School. They may even experience a sense of community among other fans. But there’s not much to learn or discover other than some show clips, brief blogs, and a variety of posts. Fans searching for a more meaningful connection to the characters (and the actors who portray them) or substantial insight into the show probably won’t leave feeling very victorious.

Online interaction: Registered users are encouraged to comment on posts, blogs, music, and videos. The comments are typically simple and sweet (“oh, ur so funny!”).

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about how sites like The Slap help promote television shows such as Victorious. What purpose do they serve? Do you think the actors from television shows actually write their own posts and blogs? Why or why not?

  • Why is it important to stay safe when you’re in a social network, even when you’re on one that seems trustworthy or from a reputable entity, like Nick.com?

  • Families can also talk about being cautious about where you click and what you say when you’re online. How can you ensure you remain safe when you’re on the Internet?
