Common Sense Note

Parents should know that the beginning of the film takes place in a pub and there are some drunken characters (but not Muppets). There are also some fight scenes, though there is no blood, or stuffing, shed.

Families who see this movie might talk about what motivates Long John Silver to not harm Jim, and why Jim makes the final decision he does about John. This being the Muppets, there are also all kinds of jokes and references to talk about and laugh over.

Common Sense Review

Reviewed By: Sarah Wenk

Everything is just funnier with Muppets. This loose adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson novel is full of the kind of humor the Muppets are famous for, from jokes about Disney to a pirate with a talking lobster instead of a talking parrot.

The story is a classic, in which a young orphan boy sets out (with his friends Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat) to find buried treasure, is kidnapped by pirates, and has to rescue his captain. Of course, in this version, his captain is a mild-mannered frog.

Among the human performers, Tim Curry has a blast as the pirate Long John Silver, and Kevin Bishop is believable and earnest as Jim Hawkins, the young boy who longs to be out at sea. There are funny songs, zany characters, and an entrance by Miss Piggy that's right up there with Elizabeth Taylor's in Cleopatra. Through all the joking, though, the message of loyalty, friendship, and finding your destiny comes through loud and clear. This is a very funny movie that both kids and adults will enjoy.

Fans of the story may also enjoy the 1950 version of Treasure Island. For Muppets fans, you can't go wrong with The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppet Movie, and The Muppet Show.
