Common Sense, the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families, issued the following statement urging Congress to act quickly on landmark legislation to protect kids from the harms of vaping and e-cigarettes.

"Common Sense strongly support efforts in Congress to protect kids from the dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping products that are specifically designed and marketed to lure kids and youth into the deadly world of tobacco," said James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense.

"In particular," Steyer added, "we encourage Members of Congress to support the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act, introduced by Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Frank Pallone (NJ) and Rep. Donna Shalala (FL) and which recently had a hearing in the committee's health subcommittee. Chairman Pallone, Rep. Shalala, and the bill's other co-sponsors are absolutely correct that we cannot afford to wait any longer to reverse the damage the industry has done. We urge every Member of Congress to support this bill and for Congress to move quickly to pass it in order to fight back against Big Tobacco’s dangerous use of flavored e-cigarettes designed to addict kids.

“From candy cigarettes and Joe Camel, to sweet flavors and high-tech e-cigs, a consistent tactic in Big Tobacco’s evil playbook is their cynical marketing that targets kids,” Steyer said. “This important legislation fights back against Big Tobacco’s latest ploy of luring kids to sweet-flavored vaping products, and hooking them on a deadly nicotine addiction.”

Using kid-friendly flavors, social media marketing, and sleek high-tech designs, tobacco and vaping companies have convinced too many young people that vaping is cool. Despite claims they don't market to teens, these tactics have led to a new epidemic of nicotine addiction and increasing cases of serious harm -- and even death -- tied to vaping. That’s why Common Sense strongly supports the Pallone/Shalala bill and why we launched a national campaign to protect kids from e-cigarettes.
