The following statement was released by Common Sense Founder and CEO James Steyer today in reaction to Governor Brown’s State of the State Address and the Swearing-in of Attorney General Xavier Becerra:
“In these uncertain times, I applaud Governor Brown for laying out the need for all of us to work together to protect California’s priorities and everyone who has contributed to our state’s success.
"The Governor is right: when California does well, America does well. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that California’s children are not doing well today.
"Our kids are suffering the fourth-worst economic well-being in the country. Far too many children and families do not have access to the early childhood, childcare, education, health, dental, and family supports they need to thrive. The status quo is unacceptable. Incremental steps won’t solve these problems.
"California is the sixth largest economy in the world, as the Governor highlighted. And for that reason we must continue to think and dream big. We agree this is the time for courage and perseverance.
"Now, more than ever before, we must declare and then support the rights of all of our children to essential supports and services. A seismic shift is needed, and we look forward to working with Governor Brown, the Legislature, and our new Attorney General, Xavier Becerra, to ensure all children can proudly declare that California is not only their land, but truly their land of opportunity."
