SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Common Sense Media, the nation's leading nonpartisan organization dedicated to improving families’ experiences with media and entertainment, today announced the honorees for the Sixth Annual Common Sense Media Awards, to be held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, on Thursday, February 25, 2010.
The complete list of honorees includes:
- George Lucas, filmmaker, director, producer, writer, founder of the George Lucas Educational Foundation and Chairman, Lucasfilm Ltd. will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Innovation in Entertainment and Education.
- Dr. Howard Gardner, School of Education, Harvard University, and a pioneering expert in education and the field of “multiple intelligences,” will receive the award for Outstanding Leadership in Education and Digital Ethics.
- Dr. Nichole Pinkard, who, through her Digital Youth Network in Chicago, is on the ground, training young people to use digital media, will receive the award for Outstanding Commitment to Creativity and Youth.
- Hon. Julius Genachowski, founding board member of Common Sense Media, will receive The Newt Minow Public Policy Award for Outstanding Leadership on Behalf of Children and Families. Newt Minow, former chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, will present the award to Mr. Genachowski.
“This year, Common Sense Media chose to honor a group of leaders whose visionary ideas are setting the standard for how our kids will both experience and embrace the incredible technology of this brave new media world,” said James P. Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense Media. “From inspiring inner city students to use digital media as a form of personal expression and creativity, to establishing the building blocks of a policy that will ensure an entire generation of kids will not only have equal access to these technologies, but also learn how to use them safely, this year’s honorees are truly committed to helping both parents and kids become safe, smart digital citizens.”
This year marks the awards’ second trip to the Kennedy Center. The event will be emceed by award-winning actress, Alfre Woodard. In addition to her on-screen accolades, Ms. Woodard is also a member of the President’s Commission on Arts and Humanities. The audience will include more than 400 influential guests representing the worlds of education, government/public leadership, industry, and business.
