SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Common Sense Media, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, today released Digital Passport™, a mobile app for Android and iPad. Time Warner Cable has partnered with Common Sense Media to provide the app for free until August 31, 2013.
Based on lessons from Common Sense Media's pioneering K-12 digital literacy and citizenship curriculum – currently taught in more than 50,000 schools nationwide – Digital Passport™ uses engaging games and videos to address the key issues that kids face online: safety and security, privacy, cyberbullying, responsible cell phone use, and respecting creative work. Designed for children in grades 3-5, the app allows users to collect badges as they advance through topic areas at their own pace to ultimately earn their Digital Passport™. Their progress is tracked and measured so that parents can evaluate their children's readiness to be online and use mobile devices.
Digital Passport™ mobile is the consumer version of Common Sense Media's Digital Passport™ web-based tool for educators. Since its launch in August 2012, nearly 15,000 educators have registered more than 300,000 students for the classroom version. To date, more than 37,000 digital passports have been issued.
"Media and technology present so many great opportunities to explore, discover, and create," said James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media. "We need to make sure that our kids are ready to harness the power of these tools and use them responsibly, particularly as they start to venture into the digital world on their own. This app makes it easy for parents to continue teaching these concepts at home, especially since it's free this summer thanks to Time Warner Cable."
Time Warner Cable's support for Digital Passport™ mobile is the centerpiece of a summer-long campaign to encourage online safety and digital responsibility. Learn more about the campaign at websafety.twc.com.
