NEW YORK, Oct. 30, 2019—Common Sense, the global nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in today's complicated digital world, today announced the honorees for the 2019 Common Sense Awards, an annual celebration that recognizes and celebrates the best in children's entertainment, education, and advocacy. This year, Michael Bloomberg will be honored with the Champion for Kids award; Sesame Workshop will be given the Legacy award; and the film The Farewell will be recognized with the Great Family Media award at a gala at The Shed on October 29, hosted by Savannah Guthrie of Today.
"In today's 24/7 digital world, the Common Sense Awards are an opportunity to pause and applaud the visionaries who are committed to kids," said James P. Steyer, CEO and founder of Common Sense. "This year's honorees are creators, educators, and advocates whose work showcases diverse perspectives, spawns innovative, educational content, and challenges the establishment, to enrich and protect the lives of children all around the world. "
Champion for Kids award: Michael Bloomberg
Michael Bloomberg is a true example of a champion for kids with his clear-eyed and courageous efforts to achieve a world where our kids are safe and thriving. His work in media, education, and advocacy shows a rare breadth and depth of impact on individuals, communities, and the world.
“Michael Bloomberg's new initiative and major investment to combat vaping and Big Tobacco is another example of his commitment to ensuring a healthy future for children," said James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense. “He is unafraid of Big Enemies, taking on entrenched issues and challenging established norms.”
Legacy award: Sesame Workshop
Sesame Workshop is a pioneer in children's media that has remained relevant and resonant for half a century. As we have faced increasing challenges and changes in our society, our families, and our culture, Sesame Workshop has taught generations of viewers to embrace the new landscape to help us break down barriers, embrace our differences, and build caring communities. We honor them for using media and creative storytelling to tackle tough issues in an entertaining and inclusive way.
Great Family Media award: The Farewell
For its amazing storytelling and for sharing great messages about compassion, empathy, and self-control, Common Sense is proud to honor The Farewell with our Great Family Media award for 2019. Common Sense Media chose The Farewell, which was released earlier this year, as a Common Sense Selection—a distinction signifying that families can trust a media title to spark learning or conversations at home, and have a positive, lasting impact on society.
Common Sense Media describes director Lulu Wang's The Farewell as "a simple but genius film about family that sheds light on Chinese culture and philosophy" and provides parents with an opportunity to understand and talk about cultural values with their kids.
The awards show will feature spoken word performances by Malachi Byrd and Pages Matam and a special performance by Vy Higginson's Sing Harlem Choir.
