Jim Steyer, Common Sense CEO and founder, released the following statement in response to France’s recent decision to:
- ban dangerously thin models from runways;
- require Photoshopped images to be identified as retouched; and
- ban pro-anorexia websites that promote "thin-spiration."
"France is now the fourth country, joining Spain, Italy, and Israel, to take action to protect girls and women who risk their health to work in the fashion industry -- or who look like they do. These countries have made a statement that the physical and psychological well-being of girls and women is more important than the fashion industry profiting off the promotion of ultrathin models. Today, we call on the U.S. fashion industry and our nation's leaders to join the commitment that France, Spain, Italy, and Israel have shown to addressing the body-image crisis. By celebrating and promoting realistic portrayals of beauty that consider all body types, these leaders will show America's young girls and boys all healthy shapes and sizes as accepted and appreciated -- an important message for them to hear."
