SAN FRANCISCO, July 2, 2025 — The California Senate Judiciary Committee approved Assembly Bill 56 (AB 56), which would require warning labels on social media platforms. The bill is backed by Common Sense Media, authored by Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, and sponsored by Attorney General Rob Bonta.

In response, Common Sense Media Founder and CEO James P. Steyer issued the following statement:

"Common Sense Media applauds the Judiciary Committee's support for warning labels on social media platforms. We thank Chairman Umberg, Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, and Attorney General Bonta for championing AB 56. This progress, combined with the passage of similar legislation in New York last month, is further proof of the momentum behind social media warning labels that is building from coast to coast.

"For too long, social media companies have used our kids as ‘guinea pigs' for addictive feeds, targeted algorithms, and more. It's critical that kids and families have all the facts about social media use. By requiring warning labels on social media platforms — just like we have for other addictive products like tobacco and alcohol — AB 56 would do exactly that.

"We're hopeful that the Senate Appropriations Committee will approve the bill, clearing the way for full Senate consideration and ultimately sending it to Governor Newsom's desk."
