Common Sense Kids Action Applauds Governor Jerry Brown For Signing Into Law Legislation to Protect Children from Tobacco

San Francisco, CA – Common Sense Kids Action Founder and CEO James P. Steyer released the following statement in reaction to Governor Jerry Brown signing into law anti-tobacco legislation, including three bills the organization has rated "For Kids" in its Common Sense Legislative Ratings initiative:

"We applaud Governor Brown for signing into law the first significant anti-tobacco legislation in nearly two decades. This is a major victory for public health and California's children.

"Common Sense Kids Action believes we must urgently address what an United States Surgeon General referred to as a "pediatric epidemic" of tobacco use. These new laws will help reduce the chance that children will be impacted by the negative lifetime health risks associated with these harmful products. They will help save lives. That's why we've rated them "For Kids."

Common Sense Kids Action also supported two other bills in the tobacco bill package signed into law: ABX2-7 by Assemblymember Mark Stone (to remove many exemptions that allowed smoking in indoor locations) and ABX2-11 by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian (to increase the tobacco retailer and distributor license fees).
