Common Sense Media Advocates for 50% Increase in FTC Budget for 2022
San Francisco (May 14, 2021) -- Ariel Fox Johnson, Senior Counsel, Global Policy at Common Sense Media, issues the following statement to support a 50% increase in FTC's budget that would enable approximately 850 additional staff and funding for other critical FTC priorities:
"For years, the FTC has been underfunded and overmatched relative to the growing tech companies it is supposed to oversee--and kids and families are the ones who suffer. It faces a herculean task as it strives to protect privacy, stop deceptive marketing, and address anti-competitive practices. And, as technology pervades even more aspects of our daily lives, the FTC's duties will only grow--whether or not Congress passes a privacy law. Child and consumer advocates are calling now for Congress to provide an increase of at least 50% in funding to the FTC to help ensure this critical agency can do its job to protect children and families."
