SAN FRANCISCO, September 29, 2023— Today, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to decide whether Florida and Texas may prohibit large social media companies from removing posts based on the views they express. In response, Jim Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, issued the following statement.

"It would be absurd for the government to prevent tech companies from fulfilling their obligation to moderate unhealthy content posted on their platforms in order to protect kids and families. Rather, social media companies need to improve their design features and algorithms that target minors with unhealthy content, including hate speech and disinformation that can cause serious harm.

Even though Common Sense Media has a history of opposition to tech industry practices, we agree with them that the Texas and Florida laws must be struck down. Congress isn't moving fast enough to establish guardrails on Big Tech to protect kids, families, and all users. Until that happens, we will support solutions that protect all Americans online."
