Common Sense Media Celebrates Passage of Key CSAM Bills
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 29, 2024 — Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed into law AB 1831 and SB 1381, both landmark bills that strengthen online privacy protections for kids across the state, a longtime priority for Common Sense Media.
In response, James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, issued the following statement:
"California has taken a significant step forward in protecting children from the harms of AI-generated child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through the passage of two groundbreaking bills. We are deeply grateful to Governor Newsom, Assemblymember Marc Berman, and Senator Aisha Wahab for their leadership and dedication in advancing AB 1831 and SB 1381, as well as to the California District Attorneys Association and the broad coalition of advocates who have championed this cause.
By expanding the definition of CSAM to include AI-generated content and strengthening enforcement mechanisms, these bills send a strong message that California will not tolerate the use of emerging technologies to exploit children. This effort will ensure that California remains at the forefront of child safety in the digital age, serving as a model for other states to follow.
We look forward to continuing our work with state and federal leaders to protect children from digital threats and build a safer online environment for all families."
