Common Sense Media Launches AI Literacy Initiative in U.S. Schools with $1M Salesforce Grant
Two-year initiative targets 330,000 students in major urban districts, aims to close AI knowledge gap in underserved communities
SAN FRANCISCO, March 24, 2025 — Common Sense Media, the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids thrive in a digital world, today announced a $1 million grant from Salesforce to champion AI literacy education in K-12 schools across the United States.
The two-year initiative will focus on delivering comprehensive AI literacy programs to school districts nationwide, with targeted support for urban districts in San Francisco, Oakland, Chicago, and New York City. This grant comes at a crucial time as artificial intelligence increasingly shapes education and young people's daily lives.
"Today's students are growing up in an AI-embedded world, yet many lack the fundamental knowledge needed to navigate these powerful technologies," said Beth Sears, Chief Development Officer at Common Sense Media. " The support from Salesforce allows us to deliver on our mission to give all young people the resources and skills they need to become informed, responsible users of AI technology."
The initiative will deliver three key components:
- Intensive support for AI implementation in select urban school districts, reaching over 330,000 students and 13,800 teachers
- Nationwide distribution of cutting-edge AI literacy resources through Common Sense's network of 90,000 U.S. schools
- Development of free, publicly available AI literacy materials and teacher training programs
Common Sense Media, which currently reaches 82% of Title I schools nationwide, will leverage its extensive educational network to implement comprehensive AI literacy programs. The initiative includes professional development for educators, curriculum implementation support, and resources for families to reinforce learning at home.
"To unlock the full potential of AI in the classroom, students need a strong foundation in AI literacy," said Ron Smith, VP of Philanthropy at Salesforce. "Common Sense has been an incredible partner over the years and we are proud to support them in equipping educators with the tools and training they need to help students navigate and leverage AI responsibly -- ensuring they are prepared to succeed in an AI-driven future."
