NEW YORK, June 4, 2026—The New York State Legislature today passed legislation that requires social media platforms to respond to law enforcement search warrants within 72 hours. Common Sense Media Chief Advocacy Officer Danny Weiss issued the following statement:

"Common Sense Media applauds New York lawmakers for passing this practical measure to protect our kids from exploitation, trafficking, sextortion, drug sales, and other serious crimes facilitated through social media platforms.

"For too long, technology companies have escaped accountability for their delay in responding to lawful search warrants, allowing criminals to prey on the kids who use their platforms for hours a day. This legislation sends a clear message: when social media platforms are used to commit or facilitate crimes, social media companies must act with urgency.

"For over a year, we have worked closely with lawmakers, law enforcement officials, parents, and advocacy organizations to advance this measure because we know that timely access to critical information can make the difference between preventing harm and responding after tragedy strikes. This is a major victory for kids and families."
