Common Sense Media believes Governor Newsom's AI task force's findings reinforce the need for significant AI legislation that our organization is currently backing in California this year, and we applaud the governor for having assembled this esteemed group of AI experts and researchers.

As the Governor's task force points out, the remarkable speed of AI advancement compels policymakers to move quickly to promote AI safety and innovation, which go hand in hand. To ensure our state continues to lead the world in AI innovation and all our kids and teens benefit, state lawmakers and the governor must make AI safety and transparency an absolute top priority this year. We should not wait!

Common Sense Media is backing several legislative measures to establish robust safeguards for AI implementation. For example, we are proud sponsors of AB 1064 (Bauer-Kahan), aimed at setting standards for AI products used by children, and we are also signing on in support of SB 53 (Wiener), which seeks to offer protections for whistleblowers.
