Common Sense Media Strongly Opposes AI State Law Moratorium in Reconciliation Bill
WASHINGTON, DC June 22, 2025 — In response to the Senate Parliamentarian's decision to allow a provision banning the enforcement of state-level AI laws for the next decade to remain in the reconciliation package, Common Sense Media Founder and CEO James P. Steyer issued the following statement:
"Common Sense Media is disappointed in the ruling by the parliamentarian to allow a 10-year moratorium on AI state law enforcement within the budget reconciliation bill, a provision opposed by bipartisan lawmakers, state attorneys general, civil society groups including SafeAI Now (safeainow.org), and Americans across the country. It is unconscionable that Congress would prevent states from protecting families and children from AI risks and harms simply to benefit big tech companies. We will continue working with our Congressional allies to strip this dangerous provision from the reconciliation bill and ensure that kids and families come before corporate profits."
