SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Common Sense Media, the national nonprofit dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, is partnering with Gooru, a free search engine for learning, to feature important lessons on digital citizenship for grades 6-8.

The Gooru library of standards-aligned collections helps educators access rich, multimedia open-education resources for students from grade five through high school. Topic areas include math, science, social science, and now -- digital citizenship.

"By partnering with Gooru, we're reaching students who are using powerful technologies to create, explore, and learn," said Rebecca Randall, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Media. "Offering lessons on how to think critically, behave safely, and interact responsibly with it, we're giving these students essential skills to be able to make informed choices about how they live and treat each other in the digital world."

Based on lessons from Common Sense Media's pioneering K-12 Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum -- currently taught in more than 50,000 schools nationwide -- the five digital citizenship collections on Gooru address key issues that students face online: safety and security, smart searching, privacy, cyberbullying, and respecting creative work. The collections include lesson plans, videos, and accompanying materials for classroom work, as well as information for parents and at-home use.

"Our mission is to harness technology and organize the best of the web so that teachers and students can easily find the resources they need to teach or learn," said Prasad Ram, CEO and founder of Gooru. "By partnering with Common Sense Media, we are able to share its important, teacher-tested content with our educator community, and Digital Learning Day is the perfect opportunity for us to do so."
