Craig Newmark Philanthropies Pledges Support to Common Sense Media to Help Protect Kids and Families Online
$2 million from the founder of craigslist will support Common Sense's education, awareness, and advocacy efforts around cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and tech policy accountability
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 19, 2024—Common Sense Media today announced a renewed partnership with Craig Newmark Philanthropies (CNP) to help shape tech policies and practices that protect people from the harmful side effects of advanced and emerging technologies.
CNP will contribute $2 million to support three core projects at Common Sense: its AI Initiative to provide critical ratings and review of AI products, an education and awareness campaign around cybersecurity for millions of parents and teachers, and the organization's leading role in advocating for data privacy and social media accountability policy to protects kids and teens online.
The grant to Common Sense was included as part of a larger $100 million initiative to protect Americans from cyberattacks that Newmark announced yesterday at the annual Aspen Digital Cyber Summit.
"Like Common Sense Media, Craig Newmark deeply understands the urgency of making sure advanced technology is designed and implemented with safeguards for children, teens, their families, and our democracy," said James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, the nation's leading kids and technology nonprofit. "We thank Craig Newmark, and Craig Newmark Philanthropies, for his continued leadership in holding tech platforms accountable, and for putting his money where his mouth is when it comes to keeping people safe online."
To date, funding from Craig Newmark Philanthropies has contributed to the development of Common Sense's AI ratings and reviews system, expanded cybersecurity education and awareness, and Common Sense's long-standing leadership role on data privacy and platform accountability policy advocacy.
