San Francisco, CA (December 14, 2020) -- The following was released by James P. Steyer, founder and CEO of Common Sense, on the new UK laws to hold tech platforms accountable:

"We applaud the government of the United Kingdom for moving forward with a plan to hold social media companies accountable for the illegal and harmful content that proliferates on their sites. We are especially heartened to see that companies will be held to higher standards when dealing with children and that there are serious regulatory fines for failing to live up to promises. The detailed work is just commencing now, and we look forward to working with the UK government and Ofcom to help ensure robust and meaningful legislation that can be a model across the world. This action, combined with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission's announcement of a 6(b) study in the U.S. and a similar effort being pursued in Ireland, demonstrate that regulators across the globe are starting to seriously grapple with tech behemoths."
