Statement on Free Speech Coalition, Inc. v. Paxton Ruling
SAN FRANCISCO, June 27, 2025 — The U.S. Supreme Court today ruled that online age assurance requirements for adult sites can be constitutional. In response, Common Sense Media Founder and CEO James P. Steyer issued the following statement:
"Today's ruling is an important step toward a safer online future for kids.
"In ruling that states may require age assurance on pornographic websites, the Court has made clear what most families already know — that some online spaces are simply not appropriate for kids — and that states can take reasonable steps to minimize kids' exposure to explicit material.
"This ruling leaves the door open for other thoughtful legislation, including kids' privacy and safe design laws, to move forward.
"Following this ruling, Common Sense Media remains committed to working with policymakers across the country and political aisle to find solutions that empower families and build healthier online environments for all kids."
