Statement on New White House Legislative Recommendations on AI
SAN FRANCISCO, March 20, 2026—Common Sense Media Founder and CEO James P. Steyer released the following statement on the White House's new legislative recommendations on artificial intelligence:
"Common Sense Media maintains that Congress has an important role to play to address the risks that AI poses to America's kids and families and other constituencies, and it should move thoughtfully and quickly to do so. However, we fundamentally disagree that the federal government should preempt the states from passing and enforcing AI safety laws, as proposed by the White House.
"AI systems are powerful and evolving at breakneck speed. The federal government can set the floor if and when it passes safety measures. But states, which move far more quickly than Congress, should remain free to build on those laws or enact new ones as needed for their constituents. This is a No Brainer!"
