Statement On New York City Public Schools' AI Policy

SAN FRANCISCO, September 2, 2026 - In response to New York City Public Schools' new policy barring younger students from using AI, Common Sense Media Founder and CEO Jim Steyer released the following statement:

"We're glad to see New York City Public Schools articulating an approach to AI that is aligned with our age and stage guidance for AI learning and development. Across three years of independent AI risk assessments, we've found that leading chatbots are not aligned with kids' safety, learning, and developmental needs. More school districts should engage their communities in conversations about the role of AI technology in learning.

What students need most is AI literacy. The technology has already become a core part of internet use, including the AI answers provided at the top of Google searches. Our recent surveys have found that AI use has become nearly ubiquitous in the lives of American teens and tweens—and even when it's banned at school, students use it on personal devices. But 73% of teens report they've never talked to a teacher about what AI is and how it works.

Schools need to help students understand the limits of the technology and how to stay safe with it, while emphasizing the critical thinking skills they'll need in the future. Our new high school curriculum—free for all educators—offers a way for educators to start teaching digital literacy and well-being right away."
