SAN FRANCISCO, November 4, 2022— Today, Jim Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media, issued the following statement in response to layoffs of employees at Twitter who are responsible for the platform's content moderation tools.

"Elon Musk's layoffs to Twitter's policy enforcement teams will destroy the platform's capacity to stop the spread of hate speech, misinformation, and disinformation at a time when the American public and voters need access to facts and civil discourse more than ever.

"While not perfect, the company's existing Twitter Rules are intended to reduce users' exposure to harmful content and hateful conduct. But the rules cannot be adequately enforced if the teams required to safeguard the town square are run out of town.

"Twitter's mass layoffs will erode its content moderation capabilities and every effort must be made to preserve them."
