SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2025 -- Common Sense Media, the leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of media and technology, today announced the appointment of Bruce Reed as Head of Common Sense AI. Reed joins the organization from his role as White House Deputy Chief of Staff to President Joe Biden.

"There is no better leader to help navigate the intersection of AI, policy, and child well-being than Bruce Reed," said James P. Steyer, Founder and CEO of Common Sense Media. "His unique blend of policy expertise and commitment to public service has shaped three presidential administrations. Now, as AI transforms education and childhood itself, Bruce will help ensure that AI must look out for the health, safety, and best interests of youth and families."

Reed served as a top White House policy adviser in three administrations over the past four decades. As President Clinton's chief domestic policy adviser, he led the charge on a host of issues to help children and families, from education and child care to public safety and gun safety. In the Obama-Biden administration, he served as chief of staff to Vice President Biden and senior adviser on economic and budget policy. As Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy for the Biden-Harris administration, he oversaw policy development and the President's annual policy blueprint, the State of the Union Address. Over his career, he has worked on 17 State of the Union Addresses. Dubbed Biden's "AI Whisperer" by Politico, Reed led a government-wide policy effort that produced voluntary commitments on AI safety and testing from the leading tech companies as well as a sweeping Executive Order on safe and responsible AI.

From 2015 to 2020, Reed worked with Common Sense Media as a senior advisor on tech policy. He was a lead negotiator in crafting the landmark California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, the first comprehensive consumer privacy law ever passed in this country. Along with Jim Steyer, he was also a contributing author of the bestselling 2020 anthology, Which Side of History? How Technology Is Reshaping Democracy and Our Lives.

"AI presents unprecedented opportunities and challenges for children, families, and the country," said Reed. "We have a responsibility to make sure the greatest technological leap in human history helps, not hurts, the young people whose future it will shape. That has always been Common Sense Media's mission."
