The State of Kids and Families in America 2026
March 23, 2026
It's no secret that we live in a time of political division. Yet across the country and across party lines, families have something major in common: a deep concern about their kids' future.
We wanted to hear directly from them. That's why we partnered with Echelon Insights and Lake Research Partners to conduct a comprehensive, nationwide survey of parents and kids. We asked them about their hopes and fears for young people in America, and what we heard was clear and consistent. No matter where they fall politically, families see many of the same challenges ahead and believe in many of the same solutions.
Concerns about the economy weigh heavily on parents. Many worry about whether their kids will be able to afford a home, pursue higher education, and have kids of their own. Kids are more optimistic, but across generations, families want a future where hard work opens doors and opportunity is within reach of all kids.
Mental well-being is another major concern. In a world where social media traps kids in cycles of constant comparison and unsafe AI systems make existing mental health problems worse, it’s no surprise that most kids describe their peers' mental health as "just fair" or "poor." Kids also don't think their schools do enough to support them. That’s why the majority of families say better schools and better care would go a long way toward improving their lives.
Our research reflects shared responsibility and shared resolve. Despite their differences, families are asking for thoughtful action, greater support, and a renewed commitment to ensuring every child can thrive.
