What parents need to know

Parents need to know that although this is one of TV's most iconic shows, modern kids aren't likely to enjoy it as much as their predecessors did. It might seem dull when compared with much of today's flashy, quick-witted, fast-paced kids' TV. But those who give it a chance might find some nice life lessons buried beneath the cheese.

  • It sends the message that even when you don't like them, your family is number one. It also offers a positive image of blended families and step parents.
  • Sure, the kids squabble and get jealous of one another sometimes (particularly Jan of Marcia) but it always works out thanks to Mom and Dad. Very little racial/ethnic diversity.
  • Not applicable.
  • The Brady kids go on dates, but they're about as innocent as can be.

What's the story?

In the iconic '70s sitcom THE BRADY BUNCH, a blended family tackles all sorts of life challenges together. When widowed architect Mike Brady (Robert Reed) met Carol Martin (Florence Henderson), he knew immediately that she and her three girls -- Marcia (Maureen McCormick), Jan (Eve Plumb), and Cindy (Susan Olsen) -- were a perfect fit for him and his three sons, Greg (Barry Williams), Peter (Christopher Knight), and Bobby (Mike Lookinland). Also along for the ride is chipper housekeeper Alice (Ann B. Davis). Early in the series, the Bradys learn to deal with their new living arrangements, with the boys and girls fighting over bathroom time and chores. In later seasons (the show ran for five years, from 1969 to 1974), the kids deal with personal issues revolving around dating, cliques, and identity.

Is it any good?

Adults will no doubt watch The Brady Bunch with nostalgic fondness, remembering when they first watched the Bradys build a card house, go to Hawaii, or camp in the Grand Canyon. Parents eager for some quality TV may have fun revisiting their favorite episodes with younger viewers, but kids past the tween stage may not see the appeal quite as much.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about what (and who) should define a family. Parents and step-parents can also discuss the challenges of combining two families. How can new family members find ways to relate to one another? Why is it sometimes hard for kids to accept a step-parent? Do you think the Bradys' family harmony is realistic?

Good tv show!!!
This is a good TV show, and has good morals in all the episodes. Unfortunately in the later episodes, the older brother and sister do have teen and love styles. On the good side, the show shows how the styles change over the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I haven't seen the new movie, but expect it won't be as good as the TV show. I say go ahead and watch it, except watch out for the later episodes and parents should preview the later episodes for younger kids. Good show over all, and is funny because it is a comedy and use sarcasm and funny things to live up to the title "comedy". It's GREAT!!!!!

This is a really good classic show. Kids lie to parents, but learn a lesson in the end. While the jokes can be cheesy, it's still very entertaining. In several episodes they show Mike and Carol kissing, which any sensible kid won't like. Other than that, it's fine for kids. (The actor for Mike in real life is gay, but it;s never mentioned in the show)

One of the best classic shows ever made.
I used to watch this show when I was 5 with my mom. It use to be on the Nick at night channel but too bad they don't show it anymore. :(

Marcia Marcia Marcia!
:) this show is great ONE mention of sex, in the entire series. I have the whole collection on dvd. Cousin Oliver was wondering why boys can't have babies, and when Carol says he'll explain it to him later he says that Carol obviously has a problem with discussing sex.

A Family Show... Perfect For Everyone!
In my life time, I have seen many shows. I particularly like older shows, but, the Brady Bunch is so positive. Even ''kids'' shows have questionable kissing. The Brady Bunch is should show as an example to children everywhere because of teamwork and good morals. Please, feel privileged to have a show like this. Television is already filled with unescesary bad examples witch lead to more delinquents.

Funny, in an old-fashioned sort of way.
I saw the entire series. It is interesting to watch them grow up together. Reccomended.

Here's the story, of a man named Brady...
This show helped me through puberty- I realized that even back in the 70's, kids went through the same issues as me. This show has no high expectations- the kids make mistakes, the parents help them fix them and see what they did wrong. Clean humor, and nothing else inappropriate. I think this may have been the one 70's show where no one was smoking.
