Common Sense Parents Stand Up For Kids

Last week, over 200 kids and parents from all over California met with legislators to make their voices heard on behalf of kids.

Parents are amazing. As a soon-to-be mom, I'm only beginning to understand the lengths parents will go to in order to make sure our kids have it better than we did.

This is why Common Sense Kids Action works every day to empower parents with the tools they need to make a difference on behalf of kids.

Last week, over 200 moms, dads, and kids from all over the state joined Common Sense Kids Action in California's state capitol for our first-ever Day of Action.

Together, we visited with legislative staff and spoke from the heart about the pressing needs of kids all over California.

We talked about the importance of access to high-quality early learning and care, family-friendly workplaces, and comprehensive health care. We shared stories about our own struggles and the struggles of our neighbors and offered solutions on how to make things better for California kids. Some of these moms shared stories about their difficulty finding quality child care. Teens spoke up about sharing their lunches with friends whose families couldn't provide lunch money.

For most parents, it was the first time they'd participated in this kind of grassroots lobbying. From school teachers to nutritionists, stay-at-home moms to child care providers, these parents without any previous legislative background made their voices heard because of one simple truth: Kids deserve better.

Action days like these are only one important way we can remind our legislators that their votes in a committee meeting have a direct effect on whether a child gets the opportunity to thrive in California.

I want to say a huge thank-you to all the parents who joined us in Sacramento for traveling hours on buses, missing a day of work, and spending their free time in the previous weeks polishing their personal stories so they would be ready to share their knowledge to make the voices of kids heard in the hallways of power. You inspire me to work harder every day to make kids California's top priority.

Our first-ever Day of Action proved that when parents come together, we are a force to be reckoned with.

There are legislative solutions to the issues facing our kids, and on Monday we showed our elected officials that there is a demand.

If you weren't able to make it to this Common Sense Kids Action Day, sign up to become a Kids Action Advocate and be one of the first to know about an upcoming event or campaign in your area!
