Connecticut Legislature Approves Digital Citizenship and Media-Literacy Legislation
Connecticut becomes the third state to adopt the Washington State approach championed by Common Sense Kids Action
Kids and teens today are using the immense power of digital media to explore, connect, create, and learn in ways never before imagined. With this power, young people have extraordinary opportunities; yet they face potential pitfalls, too. Meanwhile, schools are dealing with the associated ramifications, such as cyberbullying, digital cheating, and safety and security concerns. These issues underscore the need for students to learn -- and for teachers to teach -- digital literacy and digital citizenship skills.
Connecticut recently passed Senate Bill 949, a bill championed by Common Sense Kids Action. The modeled legislation expands school and district access to digital citizenship and media-literacy resources through the creation of a state advisory committee that includes researchers, administrators, educators, and others to review digital citizenship and media-literacy curricula and policy. In passing this legislation, lawmakers in Hartford have shown their commitment to safely harnessing the power of technology within the classroom.
