Plan a video call with your little one to show how technology can help keep us together.

A tablet screen is displaying an incoming video call from "Nana," an animated elderly version of Heart, a pink animated character.

Technology can help us stay close to loved ones who live far away. With devices, kids can learn how to have meaningful conversations: asking caring questions, listening well, and sharing about themselves.

In this activity, you and your child will discover how technology can bring people together, even when they live far apart, by working together to plan a special video call to a loved one.

Materials

  • Pencil or other writing utensil
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Activity sheet or a blank piece of paper

Video: Heart Calls Nana

Directions

  1. Tell your child that you're going to plan a video call with someone special. Ask them:
    • Who are some people we love who don't live in our home?
    • How can we talk to them or see them when they're not with us?
  2. Watch the video "Heart Calls Nana" as an example of a conversation that uses technology. After watching, ask your child:
    • How did Heart use technology to talk to Nana?
    • How did Heart show that she was listening to Nana?
    • What questions did Heart ask to show she cared about Nana?
  3. Choose a person to call.
  4. Work with your child to come up with three questions they want to ask that person. Explain to your child that asking questions can be a way to show you care, like asking about their day, feelings, or interests.
  5. Help your child plan out something exciting in their life that they want to share with your loved one.
  6. Have your child draw a picture of them talking with your loved one.
  7. Before you make your video call, explain to your child that listening is an important part of calls and showing your love. Remind them to look at the screen and wait for their turn to talk.

Remember, technology is a wonderful tool that helps us stay connected with people we love. When we use it thoughtfully—by listening well, asking caring questions, and being respectful—we can make our family and friends feel special and loved, even from far away. We can also show we care in other ways, too, like writing letters, drawing pictures, or giving hugs when we see them!
