Pathways to Possibility in Career and Technical Education

The question of how we prepare young people for choice-filled lives has never been more urgent. Yet the U.S. continues to underinvest in career and technical education, especially for kids furthest from opportunity. What would it look like to take vocational education and non-traditional career pathways seriously, not as a fallback, but as a serious route to health, happiness, and economic freedom? Rancho Cielo, a unique campus in Monterey County, offers one answer. The program provides free vocational training and high school education to students who have faced incarceration, homelessness, hunger, and poverty. This session will explore what Rancho Cielo's model reveals about the broader career and technical education landscape—and what policymakers, educators, and families might learn from students who have found a unique pathway to success.
