Pretty good!

This book is very good and sends a good message out to young women. Some background is that shayla who doesn't like trouble is learning about racial issues and friendship along the way. ATTENTION SOME SPOILERS AHEAD There's not a lot of "content" other that talk about bras, liking boy, and one awkward kiss. There isn't a lot of violence other than some protests and a black man getting killed (not described) there is no language that I can remember. This book is good and has a good message.

Good for preteen girls

has a lot of talk about crushes which is entertaining but a little too much. i loved the book i don't understand how there could be bad ratings. definitely recommend if you don't care about your child having a crush or obsessing over guys.

HOW CAN THERE BE BAD RATINGS FOR THIS BOOK

Not great for me

It is better for a little bit younger kids because it is kinda cheesy, has no bad drama, and no violence. It just was not great for me because it was cheesy and I like to read more of fantasy or Greek mythology. But good message for younger kids at the end.

Meh

It was okay. Too much drama and talk about crushes, a little bit about puberty. Definitely a girls book.

Super Unoriginal and Unrealistically Dramatic...

I personally did not like this book. I had read Blended, and I thought this looked similar. What a disappointment! Even before the second chapter I knew that this book was more about social drama and boys than a girl standing up to racism. Shayla and her friends are OBSESSED with crushes and looking pretty, but they don't care about being respectful to one and other. Also, Commonsense didn't say there was any sexual content besides 'A group of kids dares a boy to kiss a girl'. There is much more! Tyler kisses Shayla and she kisses him back, Like actually full on kisses him (Eww, aren't they supposed to be ten or eleven?). And most of the book is focused on crushes and friend issues (Like a friend liking a boy that her friend also likes). There is no violence, though, and swearing wasn't noticeable. But this was one of the worst books I've ever read, and it's definitely not for kids under 11 or 12.
