awesome book, don't read the ratings, read the book and decide for yourself. also try reading other neal shusterman books

lots of killing, but the killing is seen as a duty, something required to fix the world. they kill because nature cant. some ratings say that the book might set killing as good, but they take it out of the context of the book. context is everything. the book is everything you could want in a sci-fi dystopian future novel, it covers deep themes of politics, necessity and inevitability of death, it is a modern novel with as much lessons, themes, and messages in it as a deep classic.

lots of blood but no desensitization

amazing book with great plot , and though there is a lot of violence it never dives into the gore and how it looks. It also has a great message about desensitization as per this quote ... “My greatest wish for humanity is not for peace or comfort or joy. It is that we all still die a little inside every time we witness the death of another. For only the pain of empathy will keep us human. There’s no version of God that can help us if we ever lose that.” ― Neal Shusterman, Scythe

Violence but still a great book!

The only reason I would say 12+ is because the book may not be interesting for kids below the age of 12. I read this book when I was about 11 or 12 and I really liked it! It does have violence though but this did keep me intrigued in the book. I know someone who is 10 who would have no problem reading this book but they may not be interested in this specific genre. I really loved this book and going to finish the rest of the series. Highly recommend!!!

scythe is SOOOOO good

I love this book so much. Please read it. I'm begging you! There's pretty much violence, but you probably could handle it if you are 14 or 13. You will be hooked from start to finish. I think about the scythedom all the time. You will want to get the next book, Thunderhead, right away!!! (and Thunderhead is even better) Also, did ya know that another book in this series is coming out on November 8th, 2022, called Gleanings, and I am so freaking excited!!!!

Better than I was expecting it to be!

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would! Some of my friends told me it wasn't a very good book, but I thought I'd give it a go. So glad I did! To start it was a very creative world. The storyline was smooth and the story stayed with it. The characters were unique and the action was gripping (though often times it was just the story that kept me going). There was one kiss (not passionate, more of a test). A couple uses of "bastard", "hell", and "damn". Citra reflects on a time when a boy asked another boy to go to prom instead of asking her (she recalls being very surprised and a little hurt). Another thing I love is the journal entries in the beginning of every chapter. Some of them gave me more to think about than I thought it would, with messages I wasn't expecting by just reading the description or looking at the cover. Like messages about war, taking lives, immortality. Just read it to see for yourself. The violence in here reminded me of the Hunger Games and the Maze Runner (more of the HG though): it's the whole overarching feeling (presence?) of it, both in parts where there is a lot of blood and parts where there are none. I might even be tempted to say that it's bloodier than both books mentioned above, with entire chapters describing bloodbaths by certain characters (again, sometimes during the violent parts the scenes are described in detail, sometimes they are not). Overall great book! I wasn't sure for a while, but about halfway through I warmed up and ended up loving it!

Personally, I think this book is perfectly fine for kids that are at least 10. Even though it does talk about murder, it teaches that death is necessary in the world to survive. The book also has many crossroads that the characters have to face. Overall, this book is exciting, and good to read.

Haven't finished, but it's a pretty nice book

Not finished, but the plotline is engaging. The characters seem to have depth so far and the whole idea of Scythes and gleaning is very interesting. I am currently at the VERY fine age of 11 and this book is captivating enough for me. I would say that if you can't handle the topic of death and killing very well, (no gory details included in the book) then maybe wait a little longer until you feel up to it.
