Good action adventure movie for kids 12+ and a well-timed fast forward

This is a great movie but for Disney and a PG movie there is one scene that is pivotal but should be edited. This movie has a swimming scene that shows the lead character's bare butt, a possibly accidental underwater frontal nude male shot, and an underwater bare butt and side breast shot of a female.

Great movie for discussing gender roles, feudal systems and that you can't always win.

This movie is one that I have seen many times since I was a kid. Yes, there is brief nudity of the main character's backside and a side shot of a woman; while taking a bath. There are no sex scenes. There is discussion of gender, because it is relevant to the story and plot twist. More can be seen in an advertisement or other television shows, than in this movie, most of the time. If you watch media with your children and discuss what is happening with them, there shouldn't be any problems. My own children asked lots of questions about feudal society, why people had to follow the king's instructions or that of other people. We had a good discussion about how the princess stepped up to do the right thing, but then made unwise decisions when other options presented themselves. If you have children who are sensitive to gore the scenes at the end might be too much. For anyone who takes their kids to see Marvel action movies, Transformers and the like, then they will be just fine. The movie itself is not graphic in modern terms; it has more to do with your own child's sensibilities. Beautiful stop motion work, the color screening is noticeable yet still very good for 1981. If your child is interested in fantasy movies such as Willow, Labyrinth and the like this is one to add to your must see list.

A classic, though could disturb younger viewers

This is a thrilling, moody fantasy movie that I fondly remembered from my own adolescent years. The dragon effects from ILM were a landmark for stop-motion. I was perhaps too eager for my young boys (my youngest is a mature 6 year old who loves all things to do with dragons) to enjoy it too. Keep in mind that this PG movie pre-dated the existence of the PG13 rating, which it certainly would've earned had the rating existed. A few other reviewers thought the *very* brief nudity was problematic, which I personally thought was inconsequential. At my boys' ages a bare bottom elicits all kinds of laughter; and the half-second of murky underwater female "nudity" hardly even registered on their radar. What did concern me was the gory scene with the baby dragons and the princess' body. I had both my boys cover their eyes during that scene; and my youngest was very happy to be in my wife's lap then. To an adult I'm sure it looks almost comical: over-the-top bright red rubbery body parts, but it is pretty severe I think for a child to be viewing a disembodied human foot in the mouth of a feeding dragon. We had my 6 year old sleep in our room in case of any nightmares, but he did fine. Both kids loved the movie but if I'm honest with myself I think 9 is probably the youngest age a parent would want to watch this movie.

Excellent monster movie, but some disturbing violence

There are several grisly deaths here. Impaling by spear. Burned alive by fire breath. And, most upsetting, a dead girl dismembered and eaten by baby dragons -- which are then stabbed and decapitated. This is not for little ones. Still, all that lends an air of realism and peril that makes the movie that much more effective overall. Made a decade before "Jurassic Park," this movie has -- without a doubt -- the best stop-motion animated dragon ever put on film. Budding film buffs should see it just for that. Finally, there's an interesting subtext of Christianity vs. magic -- where magic is suggested to be more effective -- that might make some viewers nervous. But there's no preaching either way and most kids (certainly not kids raised on Harry Potter!) won't notice anything except a good, somewhat gory, adventure.

Disney Made This?

I think I should mention that the above-mentioned nudity is very brief. You see the guy's bare bottom VERY clearly as he jumps into the lake, and then a murky underwater shot of the woman where nothing is too clearly defined, yet her breasts and bottom are semi-visible. I actually turned the movie off at that point, but I thought I should mention that the nudity is not as explicit or prolonged as I would have expected from reading the reviews here. Still, not appropriate for our family, so I don't think I'll be recommending this film. Also, the intensity level of this film is fairly high with some gory scenes included. Despite the Disney label, this is not a movie for the family.

Fun dragon/fantasy movie.

Somebody entered their puritanic review twice. Yes, brief nudity, but not R-Rated by a long shot. Entered this to balance the rating.
