Mature film but still appropriate

I don’t think most kids my age would really enjoy this (I loved it), but I think it’s worth watching for all adults. There is one scene where Bill Murray’s character goes into a strip club on accident, and we see a woman dancing shirtless and with very little on. There is a bit of smoking and drinking throughout the film, but nothing drastic. There isn’t serious language. If you skip over the strip club scene, this movie would be suitable for 12+. It is funny and if there is an older kid with a mature sense of humor, it’s a good watch.

Mostly PG-13

I watched the movie not knowing how much R rated stuff would be in it and I was suprised to see only one scene that was not appropriate. There was a strip club with topless women and a song that would definitely have a movie rated R. But if you were to skip past this scene then the movie would be perfectly acceptable.

Important for teens and older kids feeling despondent or lost.

Inspiring messages of recovery, second chances and connection found in this utterly beautiful movie. Also, get your kid on some Jesus and Mary Chain or Phoenix bangers.

Breathtaking

A love story to rival Romeo and Juliet. The strengths of the director, Sofia Coppola, and both of the leading actors shine in this movie. So much emotion and passion is felt when watching this movie, even though the characters hardly speak. There are a few scenes that might disturb more conservative families, but overall, this film shouldn't be missed by anyone.

Interesting movie with Scarlet Johansson and Bill Murray

There are uses of +!+!£$ and $h!+. To married people have an affair. At the beginning, a woman lies in bead wearing see thru underwear, and the camera focusses on her rear. She the walks around in her underwear, when an IT guy comes, and we see her butt. Women in a strip club wear bras and thongs that reveal their bare bottoms.

Unnecessary Nudity can be skipped

Lost in Translation is only rated R because a scene takes place in a strip club. You can easily skip over this scene because it bears no plot importance. Otherwise there is very mild language (no f bombs here) and some small references to sex. For example, a prostitute is sent Mr. Harris's room asking him to rip her stockings. Bob Harris wants nothing to do with it and the scene is more comical in nature due to the awkward translating and silly acting by the prostitute. Also, it is implied that Bob Harris had sex with a singer at his hotel, but it is not described nor mentioned (he wakes up in the morning in his underwear in bed while the singer is brushing her teeth with a robe on). The movie is ok for kids in middle school, although the story may only keep teens + hooked.

Everyone Wants to Be Found

"Lost in Translation" is an excellent drama/comedy and expertly written. It's sharply funny but its characters also feel timeless in a way. They're different ages but find a connection with each other that they don't with their significant other. They simply enjoy being in each other's company. It's a beautiful story as well as beautifully shot, highlighting the neon Tokyo nightlife. Bill Murray is at his best here, probably because with him comes this natural melancholy that he'll always have, even if he is in strictly a comedy. It serves wonderfully to his advantage here. "Lost in Translation" is a great movie and is very tame. There is one scene that takes place in a strip club and you see woman dancing in g-strings. That's about it. There is also some drinking. A-.

A twist on a classic romcom

The film's R-rating is a blessing in disguise, because younger folks might want to see a PG-rated Bill Murray comedy, but they'd be disappointed in the slow, methodical, thoughtful movie that is "LIT." The movie is decidedly adult, so I gave it a 17+, and it makes you think of the little moments that you relish before you have to go back to your everyday life. Its all got some great comedic moments, mostly at the expense of the two lead's confusion towards Japanese culture.

A big mistake on the MPAA's part.

My suggested MPAA rating: PG-13 for some smoking and a scene of nudity/sexual content. SEX: 3.5/5 - ONE SCENE, and that's it! That's the only reason this got an R rating. Come on now. The scene lasts less than 40 seconds and entails Bill Murray entering a strip club while the song "F--k the Pain Away" by the Peaches plays. LANGUAGE: 2/5 - We hear the song "F--k the Pain Away", as mentioned before, for about thirty-something seconds, and in that time the only swear word we hear is "t--ties". We don't even hear the title of the song used, and those who aren't familiar with the song won't connect the F-bomb to the film itself, because no one swears at any other point in the film. DRINKING, DRUGS & SMOKING: 3/5 - Frequent smoking.
