Common Sense Media is out of there mind with 18+, this movie easily could’ve been PG-13. I was disappointed with this movie. I love Micheal J Fox but he can’t save this movie. Had some violence buts it’s all cheesy and played for laughs. Some language as well but nothing too serious. This movie really isn’t as good as everyone says. Too much CGI and too much comedy. Not worth it

Not as bad as they say
I think people go over the top explaining this movie sometimes. There isn't a lot of violence until the near end of the movie, and while the swearing is very present, it's not too over the top. There is some crude humour, but nothing inappropriate for teens.
It used to be PG-13, which I say is a fair rating, but the graphic violence bumped it up to R. I get why it would do that, but the violence isn't too graphic, especially with Jackson trying to omit the graphic scenes as much as he could.
The scene everyone talks about--where one character's head is shot off--isn't as graphic as they say. Yes, it's still plain shot off, but with the '98 animations it wasn't really that bad, and there wasn't any prominent blood or anything.
The only other thing is the plot. It does get heavy towards the end, with Johnny's murders and his reasoning, so that might be too much for some younger viewers. This also is where the violence gets more intense, with Frank having visions of Johnny and Patricia killing the 12 residents. The only other violence involves the ghosts being hit or run over or shot or whatever, but since they're ghosts, it's nothing bad.
Overall, I'd say 14+, sticking close to its original PG-13 rating. Biggest things I would say are the swearing and the part of the story. Nothing a teen can't handle throughout. Fantastic movie, Michael J. Fox does an incredible job and it's a horror/comedy that teens and adults can enjoy.

BLOODY!!!!
A head is blown off. BLOODY. People are stabbed, cut and killed with knives. BLOODY. People die from heart attacks. Some inappropriate jokes. some language. Also, most younger kids would not understand it. Its kinda confusing.

More of a Slapstick comedy then a horrific thrill ride
Don't get me wrong, this was a great movie but if you looking for something that will keep you up at night, this isn't the movie your looking for. I watched this movie with a friend and we enjoyed it a lot, and is not a movie to be missed

The Frighteners review
I think this movie is really good if you like ghost movies. It has some scenes where there is violence (for example a persons head gets shot and it blows up with blood everywhere). I say this is 13+ because it isn't so scary. Even if the cover looks scary, the movie isn't too scary. Like they always say, don't judge a book by it's cover

brilliant film but bad language!
Okay... It's Halloween and you want to watch a funny yet thrilling movie, you decide to watch the frighteners, but are you okay with the kids watching it. Yes, it says on the box the film's rated 15, but sometimes 15 films can be alright to watch when you're young, but you just want to check it's okay. Well I strongly recommend you to watch this, as it is a brilliant film, but it does have quite strong language in some scenes and some scenes can be frightening (that's why they call it the frighteners) so just keep an eye out for those moments that may seem inappropriate. All in all I hope you have a thrill of a time.
