What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while "Right by My Side" isn't the most explicit song ever released by notoriously risque rapper Nicki Minaj, it still includes several graphic words ("s--t," "d--k," "p---y") and lyrics about sex. The song also features controversial R&B star Chris Brown.

What's the story?

"RIGHT BY MY SIDE" is the second single from Pink Holiday: Roman Reloaded, the second album from one of the biggest names in modern rap, Nicki Minaj. A duet with R&B singer Chris Brown, this track recounts the love between a guy and girl who are "not living right" without the other by their side.

Is it any good?

Though Nicki Minaj made a name for herself as a rapper, her talent for singing shines through on this single. The addition of Brown's strong vocals helps to add interest to the track beyond its fairly straightforward synth-beat.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about Nicki Minaj's choice to collaborate with R&B singer Chris Brown on this track. Why do you think she chose Brown?

  • After his notorious act of violence against girlfriend and fellow singer Rihanna, Chris Brown has started to get second chances to revive his career from artists like Minaj. Does Brown deserve it? Why or why not?

  • Do you think the duet with Brown will help or hurt Minaj? Why?
