Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice
What's the Story?
In MIKE & NICK & NICK & ALICE, Mike (James Marsden) is having an affair with his friend and work partner Nick's (Vince Vaughn) wife, Alice (Eiza González), so when Nick asks him for help one night, he can't say no. That's even though Nick is planning to give up their violent business, debt collection for a criminal gang, the next morning. But it turns out, Nick has come back from six months in the future to try to change the outcome of that fateful last night with Mike. The gambit won't be easy, and it might be both their last nights if things don't go according to plan.
Is It Any Good?
This is a violent gangster film wrapped up in a humorous concept package and built around the charm of its lead actors, Vaughn and Marsden (and the lesser known but equally charismatic González). Those are some of the reasons Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice works. But they're also some of the same reasons why the film might turn some viewers off. It's almost too much and working overtime to prove its coolness, with slow-mo fight scenes set to classic tunes and Tarantino-style asides (a long debate about the Gilmore Girls is memorable).
Yet if you can stomach the adeptly choreographed and explicit violence, and ignore the time-travel implausibility, it's an entertaining ride. Black-and-white flashbacks and well-timed plot twists keep up the momentum. Deadpan Vaughn puts in a believable double performance, but Marsden's confused sidekick and Jimmy Tatro's dim-witted gangster nearly steal the show. The fact that these gangsters (mostly) have hearts makes the film that much more satisfying.
