What's the Story?

KENSUKE'S KINGDOM begins aboard a boat, where the curious youngster Michael (Aaron MacGregor) is traveling the world with his mother (Sally Hawkins), father (Cillian Murphy), and older sister Becky (Raffey Cassidy). On one fateful night in the midst of a devastating storm, Michael is swept out to sea, eventually shipwrecked, alone, on a remote island. Or so he thought, as he realizes there is another lonely soul surviving off this same bit of land, in the form of an elderly Japanese man called Kensuke (Ken Watanabe).

This wonderful animated tale is based on the beautiful children's novel by Michael Morpurgo and comes to life in indelible, magical fashion on the big screen. With a simply stunning animation style, Kensuke's Kingdom captures the sheer beauty of the idyllic paradise that Michael finds himself shipwrecked in, with an array of vibrant colors, as you feel immersed on this island. But it feels so strikingly intimate, too, never veering away from the humanity that enriches the story. There are really clever, stylistic additions from directors Neil Boyle and Kirk Hendry, especially in how they use imagery and metaphor to delve into the flashbacks sequences. The film has a huge heart and such a wonderful affection for life in all its form, from both humankind to the animals that walk among us. Be sure to take tissues; through this beauty comes a profound and incredibly moving tale—especially for those with pets, as this film reminds us of their loyalty and adoration, which is never not moving.
