What's the story?

BLIPPI follows its titular character -- a blue-and-orange-clad bespectacled man with childlike enthusiasm and curiosity -- on a variety of field trips to see and learn new things. Blippi (Stevin John) visits sports stadiums, children's museums, playgrounds, factories, and other venues, sharing his experiences with his viewers as he observes the goings-on in his surroundings. As he explains what he sees and does, words and phrases appear on the screen to help reinforce the new concepts he introduces.

Is it any good?

Combining elements of Pee-Wee Herman and Mr. Rogers, this successful YouTube star's videos have a vast following, and it's no real surprise why. Preschoolers love how his excitement over things like firetrucks and bulldozers mimics their own, and watching him experience them firsthand is just about the next best thing to doing so themselves. Blippi has a knack for explaining things so youngsters will understand them, thereby encouraging their natural sense of wonder.

Although the channel's reception among parents is a little more hit or miss (his boundless excitement over EVERYTHING can wear on adult senses), this series is a fun collaboration of  learning and entertainment that caters to preschoolers' curiosity.

Talk to your kids about ...

  • Families can talk about how and why Blippi embraces new experiences. Does he ever seem nervous to try something new? How does he show he is open to learning? Kids: Do you enjoy visiting new places?

  • How does Blippi use his senses of sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste to fully experience where he visits? What other observational methods help him learn? What other YouTube stars do your kids enjoy watching? What do they learn from them?

  • Blippi's strong sense of curiosity is obvious in these videos. What topics inspire your kids' curiosity? In what ways do they seek opportunities to learn more?
