Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Fierce Grey Mouse is a storybook app for young kids. It tells the story of the Little Grey Mouse who decides to be a Fierce Grey Mouse for a day. His friends think that he might be a scary animal, but in the end they all just play together. The default text for the book is cut-out letters from magazines (but this can be changed in the settings to a handwritten text). The animals appear to be stickers, and the backgrounds seem to be cut out of paper. Kids turn the book pages themselves while the story is read to them by a narrator in one of several accents or languages. Kids can tap the text again to have it re-read, and tapping the characters in each picture makes them do something. The narrator can also be turned off and on. The app also has some extras including a matching game, a memory game, and two coloring in pictures, which can be saved. There is also a version of the storybook app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.
Is it any good?
FIERCE GREY MOUSE is a very sweet tale that is good for kids to read or listen to. The visuals are well done and interesting, and the variety of languages and accents available for the narrator add an interesting opportunity for kids to be exposed to different sounds and languages. The book doesn't highlight words as they are read, and kids can't tap individual words to hear them pronounced, however.
