What’s It About?
Tap on one of the sports icons as you swipe through various scenes on FIETE SPORTS to choose to compete in running, hurdles, swimming, cycling, and shot put; at the time of this review, kayaking, equestrian, paddle ball, and rowing were "coming soon." Most of the games involve extremely simple, repetitive tapping, with a bit of aiming and timing required for events such as shot put or hurdles. Watch to see if you or an opponent wins and then tap the home icon to return to the main screen. More apps by the same developer are available behind a simple parent gate.
Is It Any Good?
The lack of substance in this sports sim may be even more notable because of how good the app looks. When opening Fiete Sports, you're greeted with an absolutely enchanting visual scene of mountains, oceans, buildings, flags, and adorably quirky character-athletes with lovely animation. But when gameplay begins and tap-tap-tapping quickly bores, Fiete Sports disappoints. Though other Fiete apps are educational, this one isn't, and it underestimates its audience in a way the other apps don't. With some more complex mechanics, some problem-solving, or even a focus on practice and performance, this visually pleasing app could be a winner.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about ways that Fiete Sports' developer could improve this app. Ask your kid, what would you like to see added to this app? Choosing your own boy or girl athlete? How would you make gameplay more interesting? More challenging?
Discuss how this app only shows the few seconds of competition and the athletes on the medal stand but not the work that athletes do to prepare for those events. Talk to your kid about practice, commitment, and dedication to a goal like winning an Olympic medal.
