A Lot or a Little?
What you will—and won't—find in this app.
Ease of Play
Like the board game, the app is about gobbling things, which is done simply by tapping the screen and hoping to grab something with your hippo's mouth. There's no real learning curve.
Products & Purchases
The app is based on the popular Hasbro board game, which may prompt kids to ask for it in stores.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Hungry Hungry Hippos is an app adaptation of the popular children's game from Hasbro. Like that game, there are no real red flags for parents -- though if you don't already have the traditional version of the game, kids may ask for it when you're at the store.
Is It Any Good?
Few games invoke a sense of nostalgia like HUNGRY HUNGRY HIPPOS, which makes it satisfying to know that Hasbro's adaptation of the classic game doesn't try to change the formula. The frenetic "grab all you can" mentality and gameplay is still there, and it's good, clean fun -- especially for young kids.
Fans hoping to play online or to see any sort of advancement, though, will be disappointed. This is, quite simply, an electronic version of the board game. There's no story or new goals to strive for. You play and you win or lose, then you can try again. It's as shallow as the water the hippos are feeding in, but that doesn't make it less fun.
